The Salt Works south of Manchester anchor the valley of Goose Creek in this late nineteenth-century survey of the Eastern Kentucky Coalfield. This landscape is defined by its early commercial hubs and family-owned mercantile outposts, such as Settle Store, Brawer Store, and Boush Store, which served a population dispersed across a dense network of ridges and hollows. The terrain is marked by prominent knobs and mountains, including Raccoon Mt., High Knob, and Cradlebow Knob, forming the divide between the waters of the Rockcastle River and the South Fork Kentucky River.
