The Chagrin River valley forms a sharp geographic divide between the dense suburban expansion of eastern Cuyahoga County and the more open terrain of Geauga and Lake counties. In the early 1960s, the residential corridors of Lyndhurst and Mayfield Heights show intensive development, yet large institutional landscapes like Whitehaven Memorial Park, Acacia Park Cemetery, and the Acacia Country Club preserve significant open space.

Industry and transport dominate the northern section, where the Norfolk and Western and Conrail lines parallel the Lakeland Freeway through Wickliffe and Willoughby. The map records a concentration of parochial and private education, including Gilmour Academy, Our Lady of Mt Carmel Sch, and the Borromeo Seminary. To the east, the landscape transitions into the hills of Gates Mills and Waite Hill, where the US Coast Guard Reservation (Radio Sta) occupies a secluded position above the river.
