Further south, the landscape is defined by the winding course of the South Platte River and the high elevations of the Tarryall Mts. Topographers Willard D. Johnson and Stuart P. Johnson documented a complex terrain of granite peaks and basins, including Devils Head or Platte Mtn and the isolated Thunder Butte. This map captures the area before modern reservoir development, showing the natural drainages of Tarryall Creek and Wigwam Creek as they appeared to early travelers and settlers.
