About this map

Sweetwater River flows through the southern portion of this landscape, its path shadowed by the Oregon Trail and the movements of Emigrant parties. This survey, mapped in 1951, documents a ranching corridor defined by family holdings such as the Mc Intosh Ranch and Grieve Ranch. Near the Claytor Ranch, the presence of the Claytor School and a Windmill indicate a small but established rural community center during the mid-century. Historical markers identify significant sites along the river, including a Stage Station and Grave and the Historical Site "Three Crossings". North of the river, the terrain shifts into the drainage patterns of Buffalo Creek and the high wetlands of Stampede Meadow and Stampede Bog, all framed by the prominent granite outcrops of the Sweetwater Rocks.
