The Yukon River dominates the northern reaches of this Alaskan interior landscape, carving a complex network of channels around Victor Island and Marten Island. This mid-century survey reveals a wilderness defined by water and seasonal transit, where the Hodzana Slough and Marten Slough create a labyrinthine floodplain. Land movement through this region relied on the Winter Trail, which cuts across the marshy lowlands south of the river, passing between Tincan Lake and Horseshoe Lake.

Further south, the terrain rises into more defined features like The Buttes Gap and Three Sleep Point, marking the transition from the lake-studded flats of the Beaver Creek drainage into the higher ground of the Butte and the headwaters of Granite Creek.
