Wayne National Forest dominates much of this landscape in southern Ohio, where the hills are deeply marked by extractive industries. Surface mining operations and numerous Strip Mines are evident near Mulga and Middleton, showing the topographical impact of the coal era. The rural social fabric is preserved through a high density of country churches and family burial grounds, including Uncle John Chapel, Mt Carmel Church, and the Fisher Cemetery.

Transport and commerce follow the winding paths of Raccoon Creek and its tributaries, such as Little Raccoon Creek and Hawks Creek. Rail lines of the Baltimore and Ohio and the Chesapeake and Ohio weave through the valleys to serve small settlements like Clarion and Minerton. Of particular note for local historians is the Furnace Memorial and Morris Chapel near Buckeye, indicating the region's earlier industrial heritage in iron production.
