Candle and Dime Landing serve as the primary human outposts on this mid-century survey of the Seward Peninsula and adjacent interior. The landscape is defined by a complex drainage network, where the Buckland River and its various branches—the West Fork, North Fork, Middle Fork, and South Fork—carve through the northern plains. To the south, the terrain rises sharply toward Granite Mountain and Talik Ridge, where the headwaters of the Koyuk River and Inglutalik River begin their descent toward the coast.
