The Unicoi Mountains define the high-elevation boundary between Tennessee and North Carolina in this 2022 survey. This remote intersection of the Cherokee National Forest and the Nantahala National Forest is traversed by the Cherohala Skyway, which follows the ridgelines past prominent peaks like Haw Knob and Big Junction. Historically, these slopes were the domain of complex logging and transit networks, reflected in the system of leads and ridges such as McIntyre Lead and Hampton Lead.
