About this map

The Green River carves a deep, winding path through the center of this terrain, marking the boundary between Carbon Co and Uintah Co. This dramatic river corridor is defined by a series of navigational landmarks including Wild Horse Rapids, Steer Ridge Rapids, and Log Cabin Rapids, which punctuate the flow through Desolation Canyon. On the western side, the topography rises sharply to Steer Ridge, accessed by the unpaved Steer Ridge Rd. This high plateau landscape is dissected by numerous drainages such as Rock Creek and Calf Canyon. The settlement of Steer Ridge Bottom sits at a low point along the river, providing a rare flat area amidst the vertical relief of Van Duesen Ridge and the prominent Flat Top mesa. The map details a landscape where water and elevation dictate all movement and history.
