About this map

Oil Creek and its many tributaries, such as Tannery Creek and Griffin Creek, carve through the complex topography of this Western New York landscape. The area is defined by a string of settlements from North Cuba down through the main village of Cuba to South Cuba, where the valley floor widens. A significant cultural landmark, the Seneca Oil Spring, sits near the northeastern shore of Cuba Lake, representing a site of immense historical importance to the region's indigenous history and early energy industry. Genealogists will find several burial sites documented, including Bristol Cem, North Cuba Cem, and Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Cem. Further south, the terrain levels out near Haskell Flats and the small community of Germantown, while the northwestern corner is occupied by the Cattaraugus County-Olean Airport perched on the plateau above Union Hill.
