1973 Map of Palomino Mountain

About this map

Rio Grande National Forest and San Juan National Forest meet along the high spine of the Continental Divide in this 1970s survey. The landscape is defined by the headwaters of several major drainage systems, including Middle Trout Creek flowing north and the Middle Fork Piedra River trending south. A network of Pack Trails provides the primary means of navigation through the high country, crossing the divide at Piedra Pass. Notable high-altitude water bodies like Window Lake and Monument Lake are tucked among prominent summits such as Palomino Mountain and Sugarloaf Mountain. This survey captures the region just as photogrammetric methods from 1972 aerial photography were refining the mapping of the Mineral County and Hinsdale County line.
