Thunder Basin National Grassland dominates the western portion of this landscape, where the high plains transition between Weston and Niobrara Counties. This area is characterized by a sparse network of drainage channels and small impoundments, most notably the House Reservoir located in the eastern sections. The terrain is etched by seasonal watercourses like Robbers Roost Cr, Sheep Cr, and the descriptively named Bum Draw near the southern boundary.
