The Purgatoire River carves through this southeastern Colorado landscape at the confluence of Otero, Bent, and Las Animas counties. This 1972 survey documents a remote ranching environment defined by a complex network of canyons and draws, including Corbin Canyon, Godwin Canyon, and the deep School Section Canyon. The survival of these high-plains operations is evidenced by numerous water management features like Anstine Windmill, House Water Well, and several livestock impoundments such as Lemley Pond and Houston Pond.
