About this map

Homestead and the neighboring settlements of Copperfield and Oxbow anchor this survey along the high-elevation canyon floor of the Snake River, where the state line divides Oregon and Idaho. The landscape is defined by the intersections of several major forest boundaries, including the Wallowa National Forest, Whitman National Forest, and Payette National Forest. This modern record of the area preserves the location of the Homestead Cem and the steep, winding route of the Kleinschmidt Grade, which scales the canyon wall toward Windy Ridge. Notable tributaries such as Irondyke Creek and Ballard Creek cut through the steep topography, while the Hells Canyon Wilderness protects the northern reach. The presence of the Hells Canyon Reservoir Trl and various Forest Service roads reflects a modern focus on backcountry access in this notoriously steep drainage.
