About this map

Big Flat dominates this north-central Montana landscape, a broad upland plain defined by a series of deep drainage coulees that carve through the prairie. In the northeast corner, the Weigand Reservoir provides a significant water source for the region, while the border between Blaine and Phillips counties bisects the terrain. Transportation through this remote section of the plains is limited to the north-south corridors of Indian Hwy 8 and Mud Creek Rd. The drainage patterns are clearly visible through the naming of various landmarks such as Wolf Coulee, Allen Coulee, and Chicken Coulee, each cutting into the plateau. These features represent the classic geomorphology of the Montana high plains, where intermittent water flow has created a network of dry ravines and coulees that define local navigation and land use.
