Santa Fe Trail traces a diagonal path across this high plains landscape at the corner of Bent, Prowers, and Baca counties. The terrain is defined by a series of drainage systems, including the complex forks of Clay Creek and the meandering path of Two Butte Creek as it winds past Two Butte and Granada Butte. These watercourses provided the essential lifelines for ranching operations in this semi-arid region during the early 1970s.
