About this map

The Flathead Indian Reservation boundary cuts through high alpine terrain in the mid-1960s, separating reservation lands from the Flathead National Forest. This high-altitude landscape is defined by its extensive system of glacial lakes and perennial ice, most notably the McDonald Glacier tucked beneath McDonald Peak and West McDonald Peak. The map records a network of primitive transportation routes, specifically the pack trails that navigate difficult gaps like Mollman Pass, Eagle Pass, and Elk Pass. These trails provided the only overland access between isolated basins such as those containing Summit Lake, Elk Lake, and the clustered Crow Creek Lakes. Drainage patterns are clearly marked by the headwaters of Post Creek and Eagle Creek, feeding into larger bodies like McDonald Lake at the western edge of the survey area.
