The John Day Fossil Beds National Monument anchors this 2023 survey of the rugged Wheeler County landscape, where the John Day River carves a deep path through the canyonlands. This portion of the monument is defined by striking geological formations such as Goose Rock and the narrow passage of Picture Gorge near the junction of Us 26 and Or 19.
