Deep drainage systems and the protected plains of the Kiowa National Grassland define this high-altitude landscape along the border of Mora and Harding Counties. The Canadian River cuts through the northeast corner, joined by a complex network of seasonal drainages including Arroyo Piedra-Lumbre and Cañon Colorado. This region remains largely characterized by its natural contours and limited human infrastructure, centered on the historic Países Cem which stands as a quiet marker of earlier settlement in this remote territory. The presence of Mills Canyon Rd provides one of the few primary access points into the rugged system of canyons, including Cañon Valdez and Cañon Hondo, which have long influenced the movement of people and livestock through the northeastern New Mexico tablelands.
