The high alpine country of the San Juan National Forest is defined here by the sharp divide between the West Needle Mountains and the Needle Mountains. This landscape is marked by a complex network of glacial basins and high mesas, including Lime Mesa, Stag Mesa, and Tank Mesa. The drainage patterns are equally intricate, with the Animas River cutting through the western edge of the sheet while the Florida River flows through the southeastern portion.
