About this map

Archaeological sites and early water management define this mid-1960s landscape at the intersection of the Ute Mountain Indian Reservation and the Southern Ute Indian Reservation. Numerous Indian Ruins and Cliff Dwellings are documented across the plateaus and canyon walls, particularly surrounding Johnson Canyon and the higher elevations of the Ute Mountain Indian Reservation. This area shows a transition from historical ancestral sites to modern ranching and resource extraction, with several Gas Wells and Drill Hole markers appearing near Maverick Gulch and Barker Arroyo. Essential water sources are preserved in this arid terrain through Mancos Spring and a series of livestock-supporting impoundments including Peterson Reservoir, Floyd Reservoir, and First Reservoir. Education in this rural pocket of Colorado is anchored by the Mountain View Sch located in the northeast, serving the scattered families of the region.
