1972 Map of Little Park

USGS Topo · Published 1976

About this map

Lava flows dominate this 1970s landscape on the edge of the Snake River Plain, where the barren volcanic terrain meets the grazing lands of Little Park. The eastern portion of the map is defined by the Craters of the Moon National Monument Wilderness Boundary, preserving a stark geologic environment including the Carey Kipuka, an island of older vegetation surrounded by younger basalt. Outside the monument, the land reflects a remote ranching economy. Features such as the Laidlaw Park Holding Corral, Indian Well, and Junction Reservoir indicate the vital importance of water and livestock management in this high-desert region. A network of Jeep Trails provides the primary means of navigation through the basalt cracks and seasonal pasturelands, following the historic Base Line that bisects the territory.
