Richel Lodge serves as a lone outpost of settlement where the high-altitude forests meet the steep drainage basins of the Beartooth Mountains. Situated at the border of Carbon County and Park County, this region is defined by the intersection of the Custer National Forest and the Shoshone National Forest.
