The complex drainage system of Main Elk Creek and its many tributaries, such as West Elk Creek and East Elk Creek, creates a dissected terrain once utilized by early twentieth-century ranchers and miners. Evidence of human activity is found at the Clinetop Cow Camp near the high mesa edges and the Gray Eagle Mine tucked away on the slopes near Windy Point.
