Flathead National Forest and Lewis and Clark National Forest meet along the Continental Divide in this turn-of-the-century survey. The landscape is defined by the sharp transition from the mountainous high country of Sawtooth Ridge and Rocky Mt to the sprawling ranchlands of the eastern plains. Early settlement patterns are clearly visible through the numerous family-named landmarks, including Yeager's Ranch, Halladay's Ranch, and Miller's Ranch, many of which follow the essential water sources of the East Fork Teton River and Willow Creek. Industrial activity in this era is represented by McGurks Sawmill and a Coal Mine located near the Sun River Boundary Line. The presence of the Gates Park Trail and Red Shale Chapman Creek Trail indicates the established routes used by early travelers and forest rangers navigating the difficult terrain between Saypo and the western wilderness.
