Gallatin National Forest encompasses the vast majority of this high-altitude landscape, where the Madison and Gallatin county lines meet along the western edge. The area is defined by a dense network of wilderness corridors, including the Lee Metcalf Wilderness and the Cabin Creek Sage Basin Wildlife Management Area. Unlike more developed regions, human activity here is recorded through an extensive system of wilderness travel routes rather than roads, with the Wapiti Pack Trail and Cabin Creek Pack Trail providing the primary access through the drainage basins.
