About this map

The Mission Vieja De La Purisima land grant dominates the northern reaches of this coastal landscape, where the Santa Ynez River meets the industrial operations of the White Hills. Mid-century land use is clearly visible through the numerous strip mines, gravel pits, and dumps concentrated near the Southern Pacific rail line and the Cabrillo Highway. These industrial scars contrast with the preserved spaces of Miguelito County Park and the rural education center at Jalama School. To the south, the Santa Ynez Mountains rise sharply, shielding the La Tinta Basin and leading down to the Pacific Ocean at Jalama Beach Park. Local history is anchored by the Jalama Ranch and a network of named springs and canyons, tracing a ranching economy that persisted even as the region developed for transportation and resource extraction.
