About this map

The drainage network of the Ten Mile River and its numerous forks defines this coastal Mendocino landscape. In the mid-1960s, the terrain was characterized by a dense system of gulches and ridges, including Bucha Ridge and Smith Ridge, supporting a landscape primarily navigated by an extensive network of Jeep Trails. While mostly uninhabited forestland, local agricultural activity is marked by O'Conner Orchard in the north and the namesake Dutchmans Knoll to the south. Near the confluence of Mill Creek and the river, a Gaging Station monitored the water flow, while a Gravel Pit near Ramsey Ridge suggests the ongoing maintenance of the few rural roads like South Ten Mile River road. The map preserves the complex nomenclature of small waterways, from Seaside Creek to numerical labels like Gulch One and Two Gulch.
