About this map

Fiftymile Mountain dominates this portion of southern Utah, with its massive Straight Cliffs and Fiftymile Bench forming a high-elevation plateau above the desert floor. The landscape is defined by deep, winding drainage systems like Lake Canyon and Spencer Canyon that feed toward the Colorado River basin. The southern edge of the map reveals the rising waters of Lake Powell as they reached their normal pool elevation by the mid-1980s, filling canyons such as Balanced Rock Canyon and Driftwood Canyon. Topography here is a complex network of named ridges and flats, including Hollow Corral Ridge and Spencer Flat, which provided seasonal routes for livestock and travelers. This survey preserves a transition in the region's history, showing established stock-raising landmarks like Teddys Horse Pasture and Harveys within the newer boundaries of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.
