The boundary between Pecos County and Terrell County bisects this West Texas landscape, defined by a network of drainage features and deep incisions into the plateau. The central terrain is dominated by the winding path of Surveyor Canyon, which cuts across the southern portion of the quadrangle. To the north, the small Smokey Mountain Ranch Airport provides a remote point of access amidst the high desert brush. The drainage patterns of Lower Fourmile Draw and Sheffield Draw indicate the historical importance of water management and ephemeral streams in this part of the Trans-Pecos region. This 2022 survey captures the modern cattle ranching and aviation infrastructure of a thinly populated area where the natural geography of the draws and canyons continues to dictate the layout of roads and ranch operations.
