The Animas River cuts through the northwest corner of this high-desert landscape on the border of Colorado and New Mexico. This mid-1980s provisional study details the rugged topography of the Mesa Mountains, specifically the area surrounding the prominent Mount Nebo. The terrain is characterized by a series of deep drainage networks including Sandstone Canyon, Long Glade Canyon, and John Brown Canyon. High-altitude water sources are critical features here, with numerous named springs such as Cattail Spring, Pipeline Spring, and Hidden Springs scattered across the ridges. Evidence of human infrastructure is present through several Gas Wells and the long Ditch line that traverses the central portion of the map. The southern boundary of the Southern Ute Indian Reservation runs along the top of the sheet, marking a significant cultural and political transition in the San Juan County backcountry.
