The Tierra Amarilla Grant covers a substantial portion of this high-altitude landscape in Rio Arriba County, defined by its dramatic relief and alpine water systems as they appeared in the early 1980s. The topography is dominated by the massive profile of Brazos Peak and the high expanse of Brazos Mesa, falling away into steep drainages such as Brazos Canyon and Barlow Canyon. To the west, the landscape rises toward Sugar Loaf Mountain and its namesake Sugar Loaf Lake.
