The Lechuguilla Desert dominates this arid landscape of Yuma County, falling within the protected expanse of the Barry M Goldwater Air Force Range. To the northeast, the Copper Mountains rise sharply above the desert floor, where the Smith Mine and a small Prospect indicate historical mineral exploration in these remote peaks. The drainage of Coyote Wash cuts across the plains, leading toward the southwestern corner of the sheet where the namesake Raven Butte and the Tinajas Altas Mountains emerge. Evidence of essential water management for desert survival is seen at the Raven Butte Tank, while various 4wd tracks and benchmark markers such as BM 940 provide the only infrastructure in this strictly controlled military training environment.
