About this map

Charles M Russell National Wildlife Refuge occupies the northern half of this landscape, where the waters of Fort Peck Lake reach into the rugged breaks of Garfield County. The shoreline is defined by Hell Creek Bay, a significant indentation where Hell Creek meets the reservoir. This mid-1980s provisional survey illustrates the intricate drainage network characteristic of the Missouri River Breaks, featuring a dense system of coulees such as Two Deep Coulee and Getaway Coulee that carve through the high prairie.
