About this map

Pearse Canal and Portland Inlet form the international boundary between the United States and Canada in this mid-century maritime survey. The landscape is defined by steep fjords and isolated coastal outposts, including the Hidden Pt Cannery on the western shore of Pearse Island. On the Canadian side of the inlet, the Mylor Peninsula separates Nasoga Gulf from the larger water bodies, while the settlement of Arrandale sits at the mouth of Matheson Creek. To the south, the Kwinamass River flows through a broad delta into Kwinamass Bay, where Indian Reserve No 16 is situated. Much of the American territory falls within the Tongass National Forest, characterized by landmarks like Gap Mountain. This map illustrates the complex coastal geography and the reliance on water-based industry and transit prior to modern inland development.
