The Noatak River corridor defines this northern wilderness, serving as the primary drainage for the surrounding drainage basins in the North Slope Borough. Braided river channels and glacial lakes dominate the landscape, with Lake Narvakrak and Lake Kaiyak situated among the lowlands. The terrain is structured by the Uchugrak Hills, which separate the Kugururok River from the Sisiuk Creek drainage. A single Trail is noted in the northeast corner of the sheet, suggesting a historical route through the valleys between the Avan River and adjacent waterways. This 1955 survey, which was updated in 1984, documents the primitive state of the Noatak National Preserve and Noatak Wilderness before modern infrastructure reached this part of the Brooks Range foothills.
