About this map

Ewan Lake dominates the upper portion of this 1952 topographic study, its waters surrounded by a complex network of smaller ponds and marshy depressions characteristic of the Alaskan interior. A small cluster of Cabins sits at the northeastern corner of the lake, marking one of the few signs of human habitation in this wilderness at the start of the 1950s. To the west, the eastern edge of Crosswind Lake is visible, linked to the surrounding landscape by a dense collection of unnamed water bodies and varied elevation contours. This map represents a moment in time when the region remained largely accessible only by trail or air, with the Geological Survey utilizing aerial photography from 1950 to document a landscape defined by its intricate hydrography.
