Richardson Highway serves as the primary artery through this interior Alaska corridor, tracking the banks of the Delta River and Phelan Creek. The landscape is dominated by massive ice flows, including the Black Rapids Glacier, Castner Glacier, and Canwell Glacier, which carve through high elevation terrain such as Rainbow Ridge. Evidence of early human activity and infrastructure is centered around the valley floor, where the Millers Roadhouse (Abandoned) stands as a reminder of the era's difficult overland travel and seasonal commerce. Mining interests are localized at the Miller Mine near the confluence of the river and Miller Creek. Numerous survey markers and triangulation stations, such as VABM 5467 Miller and VABM 3838 Yost, document the mid-century effort to accurately map this complex glacial environment and its high mountain peaks.
